Abby Lee Miller has been both revered and criticized for her blunt feedback and high standards. From explaining that “everyone is replaceable” to telling children that “second is the first to lose,” Miller did anything to win during her time on Dance Moms. Yet the Abby Lee Millers of other activities are consistently underappreciated despite having the same blunt feedback and total belief in their abilities as the Dance Mom star. I seek to correct this injustice by including a list of quotes from the Abby Lee Millers in my life.
Middle School History: “That’s JV. You know what JV is? Junior Varsity. No play time for you.” (Someone wrote a one-sentence paragraph.)
Dance (during my brief time): “That’s not the best wall split that you can do. Everyone here is more flexible than that.”
Sewing class: “You don’t know how to thread a bobbin? Ok.” (I didn’t know how to thread a bobbin.)
Brain Bowl: “You are fourth on the pyramid. You didn’t impress me. Answer more questions last time.” (I am the Abby Lee Miller of Brain Bowl, and I created the pyramid system)
Model UN: “No one follows proper protocol anymore. I’m keeping the tradition alive.” (Someone forgot to formally request to remove their blazer)
Singing: “Maybe pursue other interests.” (I have a horribly off-key voice, and my friend decided to become Abby Lee Miller)
Band: “Early is on time, and on time is late. And late is unacceptable.” (I was “late”)
AP Bio: “You can’t just print out an image and glue it to your notes.” (I decided to print out an image instead of trying to freehand the entire process of cellular respiration with closeups of cellular organelles.)
Now, go forth and find your Abby Lee Millers. They’re everywhere, pushing people in all fields to achieve more than they ever thought possible.
